A year ago last weekend my kitty, Jazz, was killed by coyotes after he had accidentally slipped out of the house and and spent the night in the back yard. My home borders open space, where coyotes frequently roam – and which is why Jazz was an indoor kitty.

Last night I heard the howls from a pack of coyotes and was reminded again of Jazz. I have not replaced him, too afraid to lose another pet to the wild animals that roam the foothills nearby my home. Not a weekend goes by when I don’t see a sign posted around the neighborhood for a missing cat. When we choose to live amongst the foxes, coyotes, mountain lions and bears we must be vigilant in care of our pets, children and ourselves and respect that wild animals will only do what they know – hunt.

All animal lovers think that their pets are special and Jazz was no exception. As you can see from this photo, he could nap like nobody’s business.

In memory of Jazz. You were one cool cat!
